Rolex is the most liquid watch on earth and the most faked. Both facts come from the same place, which is that everyone knows roughly what one is worth without having to look it up.
That makes the reference number the whole conversation. Two watches that look identical across a table can be thousands apart depending on what is stamped between the lugs, whether the dial is original, and whether the papers came with it.
What we look at on a Rolex.
Reference and serial
The reference sits between the lugs at twelve and the serial at six. They have to agree with each other, with the model, and with the year the movement says it is.
Dial, hands and bezel
Refinished dials and aftermarket bezels are common and they move the value a long way. We look at the printing, the lume and whether the parts belong together.
Movement and case back
The caliber has to match the reference. Case backs come off and get checked rather than taken on trust.

Straight, not flattering.
- Sports references hold the strongest. Submariner, GMT and Daytona lead, and have for a long time.
- Box and papers are worth real money on a Rolex, more than on any other house. If you have them, bring them.
- Service history helps and a refinished dial hurts. Original parts beat perfect condition almost every time.

- Yes, and it is the category we are most active in. Bring the watch to 907 6th Ave, or send photos first and we will tell you what it is worth before you make the trip.
- How do you authenticate a Rolex?
- Reference and serial numbers, dial and hand printing, bezel, bracelet and clasp, and the movement itself against what that reference should carry. Anything that does not agree does not get listed.
- Is a Rolex worth more with box and papers?
- Yes, and on a Rolex it matters more than on most brands. If you still have the box, the card and any service records, bring them, because they change the number.
- Can I trade my Rolex toward another watch?
- Yes. Trading toward something in the case usually gets you further than selling outright and buying separately.
