Chanel has raised prices so often and so steeply that a Classic Flap bought a decade ago is frequently worth more now than it cost. That is rare in this trade and it is why the resale market for Chanel behaves unlike any other house.
It also means the counterfeiters have every reason to try. Like Louis Vuitton, Chanel moved from serial stickers to embedded chips in 2021, so the right check depends entirely on the era.
What we look at on a Chanel.
Serial sticker or chip, by era
Bags up to 2021 carry a numbered sticker with a hologram overlay. Later ones carry a chip. The number has to agree with the hardware and the style for that year.
Quilting and alignment
The diamond quilting should run continuously across seams and the flap, and the CC lock should turn the correct way. Fakes frequently miss the alignment.
Leather and hardware
Lambskin and caviar age differently and behave differently under pressure. Hardware weight, plating and the chain's link construction all get checked.
